The Singularity (documentary) Trailer
This is a trailer for the feature documentary by doug wolens.
This project has been selected to the New York Film Market in September 2009 where there will be a work-in-progress screening of material from the film. It is anticipated that the film will be completed in 2010.

Within the coming decades we will be able to create AIs with greater than human intelligence, bio-engineer our species and re-design matter through nanotechnology. How will these technologies change what it means to be human?
The Singularity - Will we survive our technology? is a comprehensive documentary showcasing the promises and perils of future technologies such as nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and robotics.
Serious thinkers in the science community are wowed by the techno-utopia promises of transcending our biology, merging with our machines, and creating greater than human intelligence.
This film illustrates how these technologies may be achieved within the next two decades then questions what these technologies could mean to humanity. Not only should we be concerned with the unintended consequences of these powerful technologies, we should pause to think about what happens if these technologies actually pan out as anticipated.

The early 1900s saw major advances in transport technology. Mankind welcomed these advances, which made life so much easier, and quickly adapted to them.
Less than a century later, jets, high-speed trains and smart cars have all become part of our lives. Journeys which used to take days are now but a matter of hours.
The advances in technology are not limited to modern means of transport. Technological possibilities in many fields, especially in health, information and communications, have assumed giant dimensions.
In many peoples view, the modern buildings they live in, the cars they drive, computers, televisions and all the other countless products of technology are entirely man-made. The fact is, however, that if they think a little deeper and engage in a conscious examination they will see that there is a very important truth behind these advances:
Technology is also an example of Gods blessings to mankind, and thanks must be given to Him for all these things. In this film, you will see why it is that technology is a blessing for which we must give thanks to God.

New Media Documentary: Technology for Social Inclusion
Sharon Daniel [Professor of Film & Digital Media, UC Santa Cruz]
Abstract:
Artist Sharon Daniel is engaged in an ongoing effort to use technology for social inclusion through the production of "new media documentaries" in which media and information technologies are deployed as a means of giving voice to the experience of socially, racially and economically marginalized "others". Daniel will discuss Palabras_ [http://palabras.ucsc.edu], a set of tools and interfaces intended to facilitate collective self-representation among communities that don't normally have access to media and information technology; Public Secrets [http://publicsecret.net], an online audio archive of statements by incarcerated women that reveal the secret injustices of the Criminal Justice System; and other works in progress.
Biography:
Sharon Daniel is a Professor of Film and Digital Media and Chair of the Digital Arts and New Media MFA program at the University of California, Santa Cruz where she teaches classes in digital media theory and practice. Her research is focused on the use and development of information and communications technologies for social inclusion. Her work has been widely exhibited in the U.S. and abroad.
